Blazosky Associates, Inc. (BAI) was subcontracted by Baker Environmental Inc. (Baker) and OHM Remediation Services Corp. (OHM) to provide engineering assistance and construction field services for the Patuxent River Naval Station’s Site 11 (Pax River) Landfill Closure project.  This project was an EPA mandated superfund remediation.  Initially, BAI was retained to provide the design and develop bid specification for the landfill gas (LFG) collection system.  As work progressed, BAI’s scope expanded to include engineering overview and LFG flare installation inspection services for the closure project.

OHM then retained BAI to provide initial system startup, operation and maintenance instruction, and final inspection services.  The system startup consisted of bringing the utility flare on-line, balancing the collection system, and maintaining the flare for the first month of operation.  Startup included evaluating and replenishing the liquid levels in the condensate management system, inspection of the LFG extraction wellheads and isolation valves, and inspection of the utility flare control components/safety features and combustion unit.  During the initial system startup, BAI performed maintenance on the collection header-piping network to check for leaks, and monitored the temperature and methane and oxygen concentrations in the LFG extracted from each well.

For five months, BAI continued to monitor and make adjustments to the collection system and the flare’s operating components.  We also provided instruction to site operational personnel, including step-by-step procedures for monitoring the collection system bringing the system online.

BAI completed the final inspection, and subsequently provided the client with the Final Report and an Operation and Maintenance Manual for the LFG system.
